Cost of Living in Estonia - Sinh hoạt phí khi du học Estonia

Today I decided to write a post about living price in "UniTartu" since many people pm me to ask for.
As I'm Vietnamese, I will list some general costs for living and then describe how I do, the total monthly price may be different a bit to someone from a Western country.

General prices:

  • Monthly rent: 80€ for a place in a double dorm room  + 20-45€ for utilities. 130-200€ for a ~16m2 room in a shared apartment + 40-80€ for utilities.
  • Bus ticket: 7.67€/month in case you already had TRP and 35.15€/90days without TRP.
  • Milk: 0.55 - 1€ per liter.
  • Bread: 0.8 - 1.5€/500gram.
  • Eggs: 1.2 - 2€/box of 10 eggs.
  • Rice: 0.9 - 1.8€/kg.
  • Pork: 4 - 4.5€/kg for pork leg and pork belly.
  • Beef: 8 - 12€/kg.
  • Salmon: 12 - 15€/kg fillet, 5 - 8€/kg whole fish.
  • Vegetables: tomatoes 1.5 - 2.5€/kg, cucumbers 1.99€/kg for imported ones and 4.99€/kg for domestic ones, Chinese cabbage 0.7 - 1.4€/kg, cabbage ~0.5€/kg, carrot ~0.6€/kg, potatoes ~0.4 - 1€/kg, etc.
  • Fruits: Banana 0.9-1.5€/kg, apple 0.7 - 2.5€/kg (many types), mandarin ~1.4 - 1.7€/kg, pomelo ~1.3€/kg, cheery & strawberry 4 - 5€/kg (in summer),etc
  • Drinks: juices ~1 - 1.5€/L, beer ~1.5€/half liter, coca 1.75€/2L, etc
Eating out:

  •  Lunch at Institute's canteen: ~1.8 - 2€/big soup, 3.5 - 5€/dish with carbohydrate sources, meat, vegetables.
  • Mc Donald, subway, kebab: 4 - 5€ for a hamburger/wrap.
  • Pizza: 12€ for 1-kg-pizza.
  • Sushi: 5 - 8€ for a set, ramen: 8-10€.
  • Estonian restaurant: 12 - 15€/dish.
  • Drink at bars: ~3.5€/half L beer. 5 - 7€ for a small cocktail.

How I do (price for a month)

  • Renting: 175€ including utilities.
  • Foods: 80€, I cook at home, rarely eat outside, bring some snacks when going to school.
  • Party: 20€ twice a month but we do at my friend's apartment, cook and drink together :D 
  • Bus ticket: 7.67€.
  • + Other things ~ 20-40€
      Total expense: 300 - 320€/month.

Some tips for saving money :D

  • For food: to get the good quality one with reasonable prices, buy beef and pork at the Meat market, chicken and salmon at Maxima, vegetables, fruits, milk at Konsum/Coopmarket/Maximarket.
  • When eating out, some restaurants have special daily offers for lunch, check here.
  • Clothes: Winter clothes' sale from late Dec - early Feb, summer clothes' sale from Oct.
